ZTE Corporation, a prominent global provider of information and communication technology solutions, has been honored with the prestigious 2023 Climate Leadership Award (A list). This recognition underscores the company’s exceptional contributions towards climate change mitigation and sustainable development.

During the “Embracing International Disclosure Standards and Amplify the Voice of Chinese Companies – CDP China 2023 Annual Report Release and Award Ceremony,” ZTE showcased its case study titled “Target-Driven, Layered Decoding: Pathways and Actions to Achieve Climate Goals” in the 2023 CDP China Corporates Disclosure Report. This resulted in ZTE being presented with the Climate Leadership Award.

Summer Chen, Vice President and General Manager of Branding & PR Strategies at ZTE, delivered a captivating speech at the event and participated in the launch of the “Actions Beyond Climate Disclosure” initiative during Shanghai Climate Week. In her speech, titled “Shaping Digital Innovation for a Shared Sustainable Future,” Chen emphasized ZTE’s commitment to green and sustainable development.

ZTE’s dedication to green development revolves around four key dimensions: green operations, green supply chain, green digital infrastructure, and green empowerment. In terms of green operations, ZTE has successfully reduced its absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 9.7% year-on-year throughout its value chain. Additionally, the company achieved a remarkable 14.58% year-on-year decrease in the physical intensity of GHG emissions during the use and maintenance phases of its telecom products sold.

The company’s green supply chain efforts include completing carbon reduction audits for over 150 suppliers and achieving a 3.26% decrease in carbon emissions intensity through the implementation of green logistics. ZTE’s commitment to green digital infrastructure is evident in its possession of over 650 green patents and conducting carbon footprint assessments for 101 products across all categories. ZTE’s innovative products and solutions have helped global operators save a staggering 10 billion kilowatt-hours in electricity consumption annually.

Furthermore, ZTE’s science-based targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction have been approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and listed on the SBTi’s target dashboard. This makes ZTE the first large-scale ICT tech company in China to receive official approval for both near-term and long-term GHG emission reduction targets.

As a member of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSI), and the COP28 Green Digital Action, ZTE is committed to being a driver of the digital economy. The company aims for net-zero emissions and endeavors to establish itself as a leading low-carbon tech company. Through technological innovation and collaboration with industry partners, ZTE seeks to shape a green and sustainable future.

ZTE Corporation has recently been recognized for its leadership in climate action and sustainability. The company received the prestigious 2023 Climate Leadership Award, highlighting its exceptional contributions to climate change mitigation and sustainable development. This recognition was presented during the CDP China 2023 Annual Report Release and Award Ceremony.

During the event, ZTE showcased its case study titled “Target-Driven, Layered Decoding: Pathways and Actions to Achieve Climate Goals” in the 2023 CDP China Corporates Disclosure Report. ZTE’s Vice President and General Manager of Branding & PR Strategies, Summer Chen, participated in the event and delivered a speech emphasizing the company’s commitment to green and sustainable development.

ZTE’s dedication to green development is based on four key dimensions: green operations, green supply chain, green digital infrastructure, and green empowerment. In terms of green operations, ZTE has successfully reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 9.7% year-on-year throughout its value chain. The company has also achieved a significant 14.58% year-on-year decrease in the physical intensity of GHG emissions during the use and maintenance phases of its telecom products.

ZTE’s green supply chain efforts include carbon reduction audits for over 150 suppliers and a 3.26% decrease in carbon emissions intensity through the implementation of green logistics. The company’s commitment to green digital infrastructure is demonstrated by its possession of over 650 green patents and conducting carbon footprint assessments for 101 products across all categories. ZTE’s innovative products and solutions have helped global operators save approximately 10 billion kilowatt-hours in electricity consumption annually.

One of the notable achievements for ZTE is the approval of its science-based targets for greenhouse gas emissions reduction by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). These targets are listed on the SBTi’s target dashboard, making ZTE the first large-scale ICT tech company in China to receive official approval for both near-term and long-term GHG emission reduction targets.

Despite ZTE’s commitment to climate action and sustainability, there are several key challenges and controversies associated with the company. One major challenge is the reliance on rare earth minerals in the production of electronic devices, including those manufactured by ZTE. The extraction and processing of rare earth minerals are associated with environmental damage and human rights concerns, as many mining operations occur in countries with lax regulations and poor working conditions. ZTE faces the challenge of ensuring the responsible sourcing of these minerals and minimizing their environmental and social impacts.

Looking ahead, there are ongoing market trends and forecasts that may impact ZTE’s climate action and sustainability efforts. The global push for a low-carbon economy and the increasing awareness of climate change among consumers and businesses are likely to drive demand for green technologies and solutions. This presents both an opportunity and a challenge for ZTE to establish itself as a leading low-carbon tech company. The company will need to continue investing in research and development to stay at the forefront of green innovation, while also addressing concerns related to environmental impact and sustainability in its supply chain.
