The call for applications is now open for the prestigious 2024 Young Scientist Sustainable Development Goals Award (Young Scientist SDGs Award). In a world facing urgent global challenges, such as sustainable development and climate action, international collaboration has become more vital than ever. Recognizing the pivotal role of young scientists in shaping the future of science and technology, the Wenzhou Growth Foundation for World Young Scientists and the World Association of Young Scientists (WAYS (preparatory)) have partnered with the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) to initiate this groundbreaking award.

The aim of the Young Scientist SDGs Award is to encourage adherence to principles, foster innovation, and promote free exploration. By recognizing the remarkable achievements of young scientists who have made significant original innovations and breakthroughs in core technologies, the award aims to drive sustainable development and advance human civilization.

The eight selected areas for the award align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include Good Health and Well-being, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, Climate Action, Life Below Water, Life on Land, and SDG Interactions (Multiple SDGs).

Young scientists worldwide, under the age of 45, are invited to participate in the selection process. To be eligible, applicants must have achieved groundbreaking research results or provided essential technological or engineering support in the abovementioned award directions. Self-nomination and nominations by renowned experts or organizations in the same research field are both accepted.

The finalists for the Young Scientist SDGs Award will be announced following a rigorous evaluation process, with a maximum of five recipients ultimately receiving the award. Each winner will receive a prize of 1 million Chinese Yuan (pre-tax) for personal use and will be recommended to become members of the World Association of Young Scientists. They will also have the opportunity to participate in high-level international conferences and activities, such as the World Young Scientist Summit and relevant United Nations events.

The award ceremony will take place during the main session of the 2024 World Young Scientist Summit in early November 2024. This platform will provide an opportunity for recipients to showcase their achievements to the world and may even include delivering keynote speeches.

Current market trends in the field of sustainable development and innovation indicate a growing focus on addressing the SDGs. Governments, businesses, and civil society organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of sustainable practices and technologies in achieving global development goals. This has led to an increased demand for research and innovation in areas such as renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and climate change adaptation.

Forecasts suggest that the need for sustainable development solutions will continue to grow in the coming years. As more countries and organizations commit to the SDGs, there will be an increasing demand for innovative technologies and approaches to achieve these goals. This creates significant opportunities for young scientists to contribute to the field and make a positive impact on global sustainability.

However, there are also key challenges and controversies associated with the subject. One challenge is the need for adequate funding and resources to support research and innovation in sustainable development. Many projects in this field require long-term investments and may face financial barriers.

Another challenge is ensuring the inclusivity and representation of diverse voices in the field. It is essential to prioritize equity and address social and economic inequalities to ensure that the benefits of sustainable development are experienced by all.

Furthermore, controversies may arise regarding the prioritization of certain SDGs over others and potential conflicts of interest between different stakeholders. Balancing the different goals and interests within the SDGs framework is a complex task that requires careful consideration.
